Marine Mammals
There are approximately 126 species of marine mammals, including whales, dolphins, seals, sea lions, manatees, dugongs, and sea otters. However, Project GloBAL is currently focusing on pinnipeds (seals and sea lions), cetaceans (whales and dolphins), and sirenians (manatees and dugongs). Cetaceans, pinnipeds, and sirenians are incidentally caught in fishing gear, mostly gillnets. Significantly fewer animals are known to be caught in trawls and on longlines.
