Project GloBAL in the Southwest Atlantic

A short summary of our activities in the Southwest Atlantic region

In June 2006, Project GloBAL held its first regional workshop in the SWA region, in Mar del Plata, Argentina. Attendees included bycatch workers from Brazil, Uruguay, and Argentina, and presentations and discussions facilitated interchange of the ‘state of bycatch knowledge’ in the region from a cross-taxa, cross-regional perspective. Most importantly, several collaborative relationships were fostered between Project GloBAL representatives and regional attendees, as well as among attendees from within the region who had previously not met or interacted despite facing shared bycatch issues. Project GloBAL is continuing to work with its regional collaborators in the SWA to improve its understanding of regional bycatch issues and trends in this region.
