Project GloBAL in the Mediterranean & Black Seas
Project GloBAL in the Mediterranean & Black Seas
To date, Project GloBAL has been focused on background research,
creating country profiles to get a better understanding of how to move
forward in this region. We are working together with past Global
Fellows to describe the nature of the bycatch problem as it pertains to
each individual country. Most work to date has been restricted to
review of the 3 main regional governing fishing bodies (ICCAT, GCFM and
the EU) and the national level information available through these
resources.
Several members of the Project GloBAL team participated in the International Sea Turtle Symposium in Crete in April of 2006, presenting work on inter-basin comparison of bycatch levels, analyses on the relationship between bycatch and landings, and numerous side projects with which our team has been involved. A regional plan of action will be formulated in the early Spring. We hope to have strong regional representation in the creation of this plan and its implementation.
