Used to harvest species that aggregate in schools, purse seines are a type of surrounding net that can be cinched like a purse. Because cetaceans like bottlenose dolphins also aggregate on fish schools, high-levels of cetacean bycatch instigated the development of new fishing practices and gear to minimize cetacean mortality.
