Area of specialization: Environmental preference, habitat utilization and population structure of highly migratory pelagic fishes using electronic tagging and genetics.  My thesis work was concerned with Pacific and Atlantic bluefin tuna but I have also studied yellowfin and albacore tuna, billfishes (sailfish, blue and black marlin), white sharks and mola.
Best part about my job: Traveling to places that I might otherwise never get to see.  Being able to spend a fair amount of time outside doing fieldwork.  The knowledge that the work we do has the potential to make a positive impact on the management of marine animals.
Biggest challenges I face:   The politics of fisheries management.
The most unusual or exciting thing that's happened to me while working in the field: Seeing white sharks feeding on a dead blue whale.  Any time I see a school of giant bluefin tuna feeding at the surface.
Why I like being a member of Project GloBAL:  Being able to work with some of the best people in their respective fields.  Addressing the global problem of bycatch.
When I’m not working at Project GloBAL, I like to: Fishing, camping, hiking, hunting…essentially anything that gets me away from my computer, which is where I spend most of my day at work.
Ten years from now, I hope I will be:  be doing conservation relevant research for the rest of my career.  I hope the work I do has practical applications to the management of marine organisms.
