The Mediterranean bluefin tuna fishery closed early this week for the purse seine fleets of France, Malta, Italy, Cyprus and Greece, and will close on June 23 for the Spanish fleet. The early closure is due in part to evidence of illegal fishing activities, including the use of spotter planes.
